Vista OEM Key location?

I just got a Dell Machine with Vista Premium. After asking for the Dell OEM Vista DVD because it was not included, I got it today.

Anyways, OEM XP disk the key was located on Winnt.sif. Anyone know where its located on Vista OEM disks?

your key should be on the PC, a small sticker somewhere on the PC.

you mean the COD sticker which doesnt match with the actual key being used, because dell uses VLK keys. I ran the Magic jelly bean application and the key doesnt match the COD.

I want to know where its stored on the OEM DVD, if its actually stored there.

The CD-Key is not stored on the actual disk. The only way to find out your key is by reading it off the side of your case. Otherwise, contact Dell. Besides, if you have an actual Vista (Dell) recovery disk, it will know what CD-Key to use (VLK) so you don't need to worry about putting in a CD-Key. I could be wrong but that is how it works with the XP version of the Dell recovery disk.

Actually it was stored on the disk, like he said for the XP OEM Dell Disk in the X:\i386\winnt.sif file. He is just asking if anyone knows how they do it on Vista as the directory structure has changed from the XP Cds..

exactly.. the Vista DVD structure is a lot different from XP CD's. From what I read online the way Vista is installed is from an image file. a WIN file under the Sources folder.

i'll keep browsing the CD...

I'd like to know this as well, since any new computer I buy will come with Vista on it, and when I blow it away to install XP, I'd like to be able to revert to factory-fresh if need be. Let us know if that's the correct location.

I think it should be in the sources directory, in pid.txt.

Yep that has it. I wonder if that's all you need to modify..
Why do you need to modify this?

unattended install stuff like that. winnt.sif was the file that was modified. Anyways right just looking around the DVD.
