Vista network speed oddity

Been using my Vista notebook, no problems for almost a year now. Sager 2090 notebook, Intel 4965agn.

I commonly watch movies from my main XP SP2 box. Has been working fine up until a week or so ago (pre SP1 upgrade, which I did the other day). Noticed that transferring a file maxes out at about 40k/s. I've refreshed the latest Intel drivers and even then, noticed I was getting over 80k/s while downloading the drivers from Intel's site, so it must be something wrong connecting specifically to the XP box.

If I connect via wired through my router, all works fine.

Any thoughts?

From which computer to where and over what connection?

then, noticed I was getting over 80k/s ... so it must be something wrong connecting specifically to the XP box.

Wait, what?
So your XP computer's connections are slow after upgrading your LAPTOPS service pack???

If I connect via wired through my router, all works fine.

I'm confused.

The problem is only when using the wireless. It also only occurs when copying FROM my XP box to my Vista laptop, and only when I'm physically doing the topying from the Vista laptop.

i.e., if I'm sitting at my XP box, choose the Vista laptop, and copy some files from my XP box to my Vista laptop, the speed is fine. If I'm sitting at my Vista laptop, choose my XP box and copy some files from XP -> Vista, its slow.

If I'm on my Vista laptop, choose some random site on the Internet - say some FTP - speeds are fine.

Will double-check this tonight, but that was my experience yesterday.

So last night, I noticed that in Networks and Sharing, the laptop was connecting, but would quickly say "Identifying..." then connected, then "Identifying..." over and over again.

In the Intel 4965AGN's driver (which I reinstalled two nights ago) panel I disabled wireless N (my router is 802.11g). It fixed that particular problem. While I was there, I chose to force g-only.

On my Vista laptop, fresh boot, I chose my XP box from Networks Places and tried to transfer a 450mb file. Time to copy = 10 minutes @ ~700KB/s. Tried the same, but copying from my XP box - it came out to 12 minutes. Yikes!

This seems VERY slow to me - more like 802.11b speeds...shouldn't it be more like a 100mb file per minute?

I'm wondering if my router is going bad? My signal is only "Very good" even though I'm maybe 6' from the router. Need to try another device...

Ok, now I understand. You're using wireless. Those speeds are typical for wireless. it is VERY slow. Try changing channels to 1, 6, 11 on your access point and see what works best.
