Vista MP3 Problem

Hello my friends, I am running into troubles with Windows Vista?. I have several MP3s that WMP11 will not play.

Each time I try to load one of them I get an error: "An audio codec is needed to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the Web, click Web Help."

So I click Web Help, which brings me to the error message C00D10D1. And that tells me that I need to search WMPlugins.com, which I do as well.

The search on that site tells me that the codec isn't found, and that I should search on the web for it. Now I have done that, and I have downloaded a lot of different codec packs too. I downloaded and installed AC3Filter, K-Lite Mega Codec, and Vista Codec Pack.

I didn't install them all at the same time either. I uninstalled one before installing the next. But they didn't help me out at all, not for WMP11 at least. I can get the file to play in a different program, but that program doesn't have burning capabilities.

I can also get the file to play by changing the extension from MP3 to MP2. But when I do that, I can't burn the file either. I want to burn it as audio, not data.

So I was wondering if anybody had any ideas on what to do to be able to burn this on Vista Home Basic. Thanks in advance!

edit: I also googled the error code, but I didn't find anything that worked. Vista won't give me the permissions that I need to rename the file for a new download, and when I try to run regsvr32 it comes up with an error. So maybe this will work if I can get higher permissions, but so far, I don't know how to do that. The controls are locked to full access for trusted installers only. Hmmm.

Ok, so are they MP3 or MP2 files? Both codecs are forms of MPEG but they're still different.

They are MP3 files. I read on a forum elsewhere that the person changed the extension from MP3 to MP2 and he was able to play the files. So I tried that and it worked, but I can only play them, I cannot burn them to an audio CD.

And if they don't play in your normal MP3 player why do you think they're MP3s?

Because they are MP3s. They play just fine in Media Player Classic, but that program doesn't have the ability to burn. This is a common problem with Vista too. Maybe this will be fixed in a future update.

Then why not use something like VLC to rip the WAV data from them and burn that?

I will try that. I didn't think of doing it that way, which is why I came to the forum for help.

Well, two points of progress. If you take the complete extension off of the file, WMP11 tries to open it by guessing. It guesses correctly, and opens it with all the info you need to be able to burn the song. That was very easy.

The second cool thing is VLC. That program is really awesome. It captures so quick, and blazes through the mp3s. I thought I was going to have to wait through the whole half hour, but it got the data I needed in literally three seconds.

So, just a tip for anyone who might be running into problems with Vista and their MP3s:
1 - Go to the command prompt ([windows key+r] -> cmd.exe ->[enter])
2 - Rename your files (c:\temp>REN NAME_OF_MP3.MP3 NAME_OF_MP3
3 - Load it in WMP and tell it to try to play extension '.' anyway.

Or
Download VLC
To capture the audio, it might take a little bit to figure it out, so here is what you want to do.
1 - Run VCL
2 - If you're saving from an MP3, choose "Open File", or CTRL+F
3 - Choose the file you want
4 - Check "Stream/Save near the bottom
5 - Click "Settings"
6 - Check "File"
7 - Name the file
8 - Click ok, click okay again on the Open dialog box
thats it!
