Vista Media Center refuses to play DVDs.

Every time I try and play a DVD in Vista (this is with Vista Ultimate), both Media Center and WMP will not play the DVDs. MC gives the following error:

"Cannot Play DVD

The DVD may be in use by another application. If all other applications are closed, the video resolution may need to be lowered or the display connection type may not support playback of this DVD."

I thought it might be because I didn't have a decoder installed (although I'm pretty sure Vista Ultimate comes with one), so I installed PowerDVD and it played fine with that, but still refused to play in MC or WMP.

All of my drivers are installed, so I don't know what to do. The only thing I can think of is that it's either because I haven't activated Vista yet, or because there's some problem with my video drivers.

Any ideas?

Weird...usually you see that error trying to output DVDs to an analog output at >480p

anything like daemon tools or any other iso mounters loaded?

Nope. It's a fresh install with nothing else installed except updates.

Open WMP11, go to Tools, Options, File Types and make sure your "Play DVD" box is checked and that you installed the Codecs for same.

Still no dice.

The error it gives in WMP is as follows:

"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card."

Ok, well I try doing what it says and Vista won't let me install the driver from the manufacturer's website (Gateway - Mobile Radeon 9600 - 128 meg) but it says the Microsoft drivers installed with it are more up to date.

Sounds like that DVD may have a copy protection scheme that WMP 11 does not like. Read this KB -parts may apply.

DRM

I would try this for the heck of it. Download DVD Decrypter and make an archival copy of your DVD sans CP and see if WMP 11 will play it.
