God what a pain. I just installed Vista Basic on my Dell 9300 laptop and only half of my keyboard keys work right. The left half of my keyboard is ok...the right half is fragged. All the alpha characters on the right side are coming out as numbers when you type. This is something I never expected. Any suggestions?

I know exactly what this is. You have numlock on.

Hit the Fn key and look for the NUM toggle. Hit it.

Solved.

:D

(I did this once on deadline. I'm a reporter. I was running out of time. I must have hit it by accident. Suddenly I couldn't finish my story. I was freaking out....thought I needed a new keyboard. . . and then it dawned on me. )

Annoying huh? I've had this happen more times than I can count. If it comes up numlocked every time you boot, check this reg key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard

InitialKeyboardIndicators REG_SZ 0 | 2

Default: 0

Determines whether the NUMLOCK key is on or off when the computer starts. The system stores the state of the NUMLOCK key in this value entry during log off and shutdown and uses this value to restore the state when the user logs on.

Value Meaning
0 NUMLOCK is off.
2 NUMLOCK is on.
