Vista keeps turning defender and virus scan back on.

I have my own virus scanner software installed. Through control panel -> security I turned windows defender (which is a incredibly stupid program) and virus scan off.

Windows, without notifying me, keeps turning them back on.

When do I find out? When I try to run an application such as Firefox, or a game like WoW or Lord of the Rings Online. Windows blocks the program from running and then crashes my entire system and forces me to power off.

Where do I turn these off so they stay off?

Thanks!

Windows doesn't come with a virus scanner. Maybe your own antivirus software is turning itself back on, though.

Your computer is Seriously Messed Up?. Antivirus software doesn't go crashing all your apps, your computer has some other issue. Can you give some specific details and/or screenshots showing what's happening? Also, download HijackThis, run it, and post your logfile: http://www.trendsecure.com/por...ls/hijackthis/download

Sorry I will have to take a picture with a camera next time. Screenshots do not work once it crashes. Before that I am double clicking the shortcut or accessing the program from the start menu.

The most recent example is as follows: Windows Defender states (even though it is off) that it has detected a possible malicious program. This program is lotro.exe which is the game client. The system then hangs.

I just don't understand how it is running when it is turned off.

Maybe it IS turned off. There's scams that pose convincingly as Windows Defender and pretend that you have infections, then they try to scam $50 from you to "fix" the non-existent problems. Sometimes they will crash your programs in an attempt to goad you into giving them the $50.

1) If you post a HijackThis log, it will probably help determine if that's what's going on here.

2) What antivirus software do you have installed, if any?

3) What is the alleged threat name of the "possible malicious program?"

Is the game you are trying to run legit or did you pirated? If the latter than it is prolly infected with something

I should post an update.

I don't have pirated software. Unless you consider using Turbine's Download Manager via my lifetime account pirating. In any case they've gone free to play.

No viruses (used 3 different virus scanners)
Hijackthis reported nothing.

It IS windows defender.

I did find a workaround though. I manually deleted all the associated windows files. Now windows tries to RUN windows defender and I get associated errors...but windows can no longer successfully block my apps so it's well worth it. Besides I get the warm fuzzy of having windows whine at me instead of preventing me from using my computer.
