Two weeks ago we replaced my wife's computer with a new Dell using Vista Home Premium. It readily sees the other XP computers on my network and it can be seen by all the other computers. It is even able to use the network laser printer. I can print to printers connected directly to the new Vista machine from the other computers on the network. From this new Vista machine, using Windows Explorer, I can see/read/copy/delete/etc. files on any of the other XP machines. So far so good.
Here is the reason for my high blood pressure. No matter what I try, from the other network XP computers, I cannot see/read/transfer files associated with this new Vista computer unless I use the "Public" folder. I cannot even look into the 'C' drive from any of the other computers. I enabled sharing etc. but nothing seems to work.
This is very frustrating because I need full access to the files in all the folders on the 'C' drive from the other computers. My wife uses this computer for her business and this limits how much I am able to help her from my XP machine. I must have access to various Word, PDF, Excel, and graphic documents. Transferring files to the "Public" folder is a partial but inconvenient work-around since this does not allow reading files on the Vista computer from the other machines (two XP desktops and two laptops).
I spent hours on the phone with Dell's Indian & Philippine support centers (Does Dell even have a presence in the USA anymore?) to absolutely no avail - what an annoying waste of time! I appreciate the increased security Vista provides but this security is worthless if we now cannot fully use our computers.
Any insight on what it takes to have readily available access to the files on my own computer would certainly be appreciated.
