Vista Installation Woes (Updated)

at 91% Expanding Files it hangs for 5-7 minutes and posts an error message saying "Windows cannot access the installation sources. Verify that the installation sources are accessible, and restaart the installation."

I tried cutting down to 2g of ram (from 4, two sticks), tried installing a few times, and frankly im out of ideas. Does anyone have any suggestions? thanks.

This is a brand new rig:

Asus P5Q Pro
Core 2 Duo 8400
2x2gb G.Skill ram
500gb WD Hard Drive
Radeon 4850

--edit--
I actually got a new disk to try to install with,

my HDD option in the bios was set to: IDE

the other options being RAID or AHCI.

I tried switching it to AHCI, now I get past expanding files but when it hits installing features, it checks it off, hangs for a minute and hits me with "Windows could not set the offline locale information. Error Code: 0x80FE0000"

between each install attempt ive formated the 10 gigs or so its used and wiped the partition leaving it as unallocated space.

What should I try now?

hit up the Bios - Under Drive options, make sure 'AHCI Mode' is enabled. Not SATA mode.

The other cause could be a drive comflict or an incompatible optical drive. Unplug anything you don't need if you have more than one optical, and perhaps swap out the optical for a different one.

Wouldn't AHCI technically be the true SATA mode? The options I've typically seen are AHCI and IDE... sometimes called SATA as IDE, which is perhaps what you're referring to? Anyway, I had a similar issue with a Vista install, but I had to do the opposite. I had to set the mode to IDE because it wouldn't install in AHCI.

I would first confirm the hardware is not the cause of the problem. For example, you can try memtest.

Memory doesnt feel to be the problem as it always dies at exactly the same point.

I will run memtest over tonight though. Im about to try a Windows XP Pro hard drive from my old pc just to check if its the hard drive. Hopefully I can use the windows xp pro hdd as primary and use it to install Vista on the second formatted hard drive.

d'oh, too many hardware changes swapping my other PCs hard drive in just caused a constant reboot cycle as it stuggled to load XP Pro.

and I dont have a spare empty hard drive to try to swap out.. Its just so weird to me that it keeps dying and having the locale error, which makes no sense to me.. as I format and deleted the partitions of each failed attempt.
