Vista installation from a DOWNGRADE

Macaco

Golden Member
Say that U bought a Dell laptop with Vista on it & downgraded to XP, has anybody tried installing that Vista COA on another PC? And if YES, did it work AOK?

Wonderinggggggggggggggggggggggg 🙁

The Vista OEM license that came installed with the laptop is forever bound to the laptop's motherboard and thus can't be legally transferred to any other machine.

Not exactly true, it`s the same as XP for now at least. You are correct about the EULA, but MS is not that strict about it. I have Vista x64 HP OEM and I have changed my motherboard twice since I first activated and each time I had to call to activate it was the same old routine as XP. They asked how many computers I had it installed on, I said one, they gave me a code, it all took 1 min.😎

The scenario the OP gave is clearly not allowed by the EULA.

Technically no it's not allowed, but as I said, the EULA states you cannot move it to another PC. However MS doesn't ask if it's a different PC when you call to reactivate, they only ask how many PC's it is installed on. I really doubt they even care much as long as you are not using your single license to install on multiple PC's, or else they would ask.

Macaco: Yes, original post

Cutthroat: "as you are not using your single license to install on multiple PC's" That is exactly what the OP is trying to do. He has ONE license, he can install EITHER XP or Vista against that license. We can take the 'which machine' issue out of the converstation. He'd like to run BOTH, however he is not licensed to do so.

NO, I think I need to clear something here.
What I meant to say is the following:

Assume that I bought a Dell laptop with Vista on it.
Then I took Vista out (FORMATTED HD/Bye Bye VISTA) & installed XP on the laptop (So Vista is not being used anymore).
Now, I would like to take the Vista which I just took out of the laptop & install it on another regular desktop PC.

That is my ??? 🙁

He said he was going to downgrade the laptop to XP, and use the Vista on a different PC, or that's the way I read it. I think he is planning on one OS per PC...

I'm not sure, but I think they can tell if the CD-Key is being used multiple times simultaneously with different hardware. That's why they don't use volume license keys anymore, so every single copy should have a unique CD-Key. I certainly wouldn't take the chance of installing it on multiple PC's anyway.

U got it Cutthroat

OK, I was a bit late with that last one but that's what I thought. Here's how I see it going...

You WILL need to call to activate, MS will answer the phone quickly with no pleasantries and ask for the number on your screen. You recite the number, they say "How many computers is this installed on", you say "one", they recite you another number, you say "thank you" and hang up.

YES, I been thru that a lot of times in the past, it is SIMPLE & PAINLESS.

BUT, has anybody done it with VISTA?

Cutthroat, I know U said U have done it, but it is the same PC, even thou it is a different MOBO. I wonder if there is any difference in my SCENARIO?????????????????

Two notes. You said downgrade, which your Vista license gives you rights to. So your actually saying you have a Vista license for that Dell AND you have a second unrelated XP license.

Unfortunately, even given the above, this is not allowed. The Vista version you got on the Dell is tied to that box and can't be put on another box. This is clearly against the EULA, it's been discussed in depth here before. You received a discount in price on Vista when purchasing the Dell (this, btw, presumes you got Vista onthe box from Dell and it's an OEM version, if it's Retail your scenario is fine as you didn't recevive a discount on the product in exchange for the restrictions). So you have your legal answer.

As for your technical question of 'regardless, will it work' the new forum policies like the old policies don't allow for discussions of piracy so this is a gentle reminder that we won't be able to have that discussion.

OK, if U read my posts, I am stating ASSUME/WONDERING, which means that I don't have ANYTHING. That's Y I say ASSUME/WONDERING. I don't even own a laptop. If U R thinking that I am implying PIRACY, then I am SORRY, but that's not what I meant this post to be. Again, that's Y I am saying ASSUME/WONDERING.

I just started this topic as a LEARNING TOPIC for myself. I just wanted to hear from other people's experiences since this is suppose to be a HIGHLY TECHNICAL FORUM.

Anyway, THANKS for all the replies to my INQUISITIVE ROAMING MIND.

Macaco, I've answered your question clearly twice now. I'm sorry you do not like the answer. What your asking is not allowed per the EULA. Any further discussions regarding 'will it work anyhow' or 'can I get around it' is discussing piracy and will likely abruptly end the thread.

New PC bought with Vista...
* Downgrade to XP on New PC = Yes
* Downgrade to XP on New PC and install Vista on different PC = No
* Reinstall Vista on New PC = Yes
* Defraud MS = Bad (even if they don't ask "How many computers is this installed on")

Storytime:
I hire Cutthroat @ $20 per hour, for phone support at my software company.
Cutthroat agrees to do the support for $20 per hour. He shows up bright and early Monday morning.
I tell him that he's also going to be changing oil and doing tune-ups on cars while still manning the support line for my company.
* I'm paying Cutthroat $20 per hour = Correct
* Cutthroat feels cheated by doing two jobs while only being paid the original $20 per hour = Correct
