I'm reformatting my PC due to new hardware and vista is prompting me for CD/DVD Drive Drivers for my SATA DVDROM drive. I checked the mfg's website (asus) and they only thing they have are firmware updates, none of them for the problem that is occuring for me. I tried using the motherboard driver disc in the off chance that it would find something on there, but to no avail. Not sure what to do, can't find any SATA drivers via google or mfg's website, naturally next step is to post here.

TIA

At what point does it prompt for the drivers? What motherboard/SATA controller are you using and what mode is it configured for? If you're running in AHCI/RAID mode you can put the SATA drivers on a USB flash drive and install drivers from that drive during the Vista setup.

Sorry for the lack of detail, had to wrap it rather quickly(posting from work).

Its a Gigabyte GA-MA78MS2H. I have it in Raid mode since I'll be running a raid config.

It prompts me for the drivers right after the vista setup asks for what language I want the install in, then it takes a while (about 3 mins) and asks me for my SATA CD/DVDROM Drivers.

I would load the drivers, but they are non-existent on Asus's site (mfg of the DVDROM drive) nor can I find any generic drivers on google etc.

As in my first post, i have tried putting the motherboard driver CD in for craps and giggles but vista didn't find the drivers it wants.

It still prompts me for the SATA drivers even if i'm running in IDE mode and attempting this without the Raid setup.

Thanks

UPDATE:

One of my Hardrives just failed, so its a no go on the raid, but alas i'm not problem free. (I'm attributing the above problem to the hard drive dying)

After i put in the product key and select which drive to be installed, it attempts to install the OS, but comes up with this error message

"Windows Setup could not reiniialize the deployment engine. To install Windows, restart the installation".

have attempted to reinstall numerous times to only get that error message yet again. Google hasn't yielded any definitive answers yet but i'm going to keep searching. If anyone knows what this message stems from please help me out

thanks

Do you mean GA-MA78GM-S2H? If so, which revision is the board? Are you positive it's prompting you for the SATA CD/DVD drivers specifically and not the drivers for the SATA controller? Can you confirm the *exact* wording of the prompt? IMO, you shouldn't need drivers for an optical drive...

Which SATA ports do you have your various SATA drives connected to? I have seen some systems that are sensitive as to which ports SATA optical drives are connected to (often it's the last internal port).

Try from a fresh start with only the DVD and one HDD connected. Then, reset the BIOS to default values/save/exit/restart and double check the BIOS to make sure things have auto detected as they should (CPU, memory, etc). Check the configuration for the SATA controller in the BIOS and confirm it is set to IDE mode for all SATA ports (0-3 + 4/eSATA in your case). Now, boot from the Vista install disc and see how far you get. If you still get the prompt re: drives, reply back with the exact wording/description of what's on the screen.

jdkick:

The wording of the error message was a little ambiguous, and I misread it. It was asking for the SATA (terrible wording on Microsoft's part) controller driver, which Is avail. for download on gigabytes website. What made it all so confusing (or at least it seemed) is that I had a hard drive failure amongst all the various errors I was receiving. I wound up just throwing XP Pro back on and called it a day, then afterwards I realized my oversight. I'm using it as a temporary setup and will probably be buying some new HDD's and goign for 64 bit ultimate, and if anyone cares I'll update the thread with making sure the drivers and everything load and the issue will be resolved.

Thanks to all for the posts/help.

I'd be interested. Just received delivery of Gigabyte's GA-MA78G-DS3H, the full ATX variant of your board. I'm fairly certain anyone considering an AMD 780G board would have an interest, since we've all the same basic Southbridge controllers.

Will probably be assembling my system this coming week. As it will primarily act as a server, I'm definitely going to enable AHCI which will probably demand appropriate drivers of me during installation...

It sounds like you've got it under control, but I would pay attention to exactly what ports are being specified when you're setting up your RAID array.

Obviously, you wouldn't want the Optical drive plugged into one of those ports.

I built a system with this board within the last month or so with a SATA Optical and had no issues. No RAID though.

As I said, it sounds like you've got it under control. Good luck to you! :)

Vista installation of drivers is actually quite nice, allows you to do it right before you select the drive/partition that you are about to install the OS on. What kinda stumped me a little bit is that when it prompted me for the driver which I thought was the SATA DVDROM, it was asking for the SATA controller, and I put in the driver disk that came with the motherboard, but vista didn't find anything it liked. I did some looking around and there is a separate driver that you have to download from the website for vista. XP didn't require any 3rd party drivers, but that was with a single drive installation, though my RAID install experiences are probalby skewed since there was no second drive that was detected (hdd died on me).

Though I've not tried it yet of course, I'm frightened of AHCI on AMD 780G owing to this description from the Tech Report.

However, if you want to get Vista running in AHCI mode, you have to first install the OS in IDE mode, then swap the hard drive to an auxiliary storage controller running on the same system, switch the SB700 to AHCI mode and install the necessary drivers, and then move the hard drive back to the south bridge. It's ridiculous to ask users to jump through hoops just to enable AHCI.

What?!

From their analysis, it doesn't seem like AHCI works all that well with SB700 anyhow. However, I'd still like to enable NCQ to reduce the amount of physical disk read/write.

By the way, I just noticed the verse (doggerel?) in your sig. That parody of 'The Raven' is hilarious.

Glad to hear you got everything up and running. It sucks when you have new toys to play with and get things working.

I had a good laugh at that last night as well. :)

IIRC, I think MS put a workaround for that issue in Vista SP1.

What exactly is AHCI used for? I've never really heard of it before, not sure what it does etc, so if osmeone could clear that up for me would be appreciated.

I am going to order a new hard drive and can give it a try if it will work with my config (2x hdd's (36GBraptor for OS and apps, 250GB for media) and a SATA drive). Currently downloading Vista x64 SP1 (technet subscription, legit )

and can report back to see if I have any issues with it.

On a side note, if you run your SATA in IDE mode, do you still get the SATA transfer speeds, IE 1.5 & 3.0? or is that what AHCI is supposed to do??

Thanks if anyone can clear this up for me
