Vista HP gives errors during installation!

I am ready to migrate one of the machines to Vista HP, but apparently Vista doesn't want to be installed.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+, ECS 6100-GSM (geforce 6100), Seagate 7200.9 SATA II 160 GB, 2 GB DDR2-667. As you can see, this is a basic machine (wife's computer) It is screaming fast (for what she does 😉) under XP MCE and no complaints in that regard.

Attempting a clean install (even though upgrade is possible from XP MCE to vista HP) goes pretty much well in the beginning, but after the reboot after the EULA, machine takes a loooong time to display something, and then I just get a message "login error". Machine starts and shows the inital vista screen, but no further operation is performed after that. I cannot see users,

I tried to repeat the clean install, and this time after the "login error" message the machine keeps restarting... In summary, I cannot complete the installation of vista

I am not sure if PCI / PCI-E card are causing a hardware conflict (I have an ultra firewire pci card, agere chipset; and an abit airpace pci-express 54g wireless card) I have not disconnected them during installation.

Any suggestions? What is going wrong?

Thanks

Alex
