Vista - How much performance will I see?

Kelemvor

Lifer
Wife has a Toshiba A135-S2246 laptop. Has 1 gig of memory and a Celeron 1.73 GHz chip.

I'm thinking about swapping out the RAM to go up to 2 gigs. Just wondering how much performance benefit I'll see for standard apps like IE, Office 2007, etc.

Here's the info from the Vista Score thing. The memory score is already 3.9 but the graphics score is really low. Not sure if upping the memory will help the graphics score by having more memory available. I do have pretty much everything turned off right now but might want to play with turning more visual things on with the more memory if it would help.

What do you think?

(1)- The stupid Vista experience score is virtually irrelevant in any real-world scenario.

(2)- 2GB will help Vista massively, particularly since that garbage R200M chipset sucks so much ram out.

(3)- 🙂

2GB will definitely help, especially when you have some of your system memory shared with the video card. My laptop has similar specs and with the low cost of DDR2 these days, it's quite sensible. Dedicating a proper USB flash drive for ReadyBoost would also bring some benefit, particularly if you stick with 1GB.

If its really being used for nothing more than office and IE, I doubt he'll see much of difference if any.

For $25 bucks, why the hell not, but Vista doesnt need more than 1gb for IE/Office, even if 128mb are being soaked up by the video.

With that laptop, I would stick with XP and increase the RAM to 2GB
The cpu is not very quick and as you said, the on board graphics
are not up to Vista ... So why waste the money for Vista ? ?

We've had it for a while now and it works just fine with VIsta but it's sluggish. WHen I got it, people tried to put XP on it but had trouble with a couple of the drivers.

I'm going to stick with VIsta since she's gotten used to it and knows it now, and I ordered the RAM so I guess we'll just see what happens.

Vista on my celeron M 440 with Intel 945 graphics is slippery smooth with 2GB. Quite snappy. Very impressive, in fact.
