Wierd. Maybe it's anecdotal, but Limewire for example is a java app. When I try to install it, part of it's installation is to install java if not detected. It fails. I downloaded the standalone installer from Sun, wouldnt install.

No, fresh install only. You cannot upgrade from 32bit to 64bit.
