Vista Home Basic & Vista Home Premium installation

I bought Vista Home to try it in my Media Center PC. During installation, it asked what version did I buy and to see what error would it give I selected Vista Home Premium. To my surprise it did not give any error and it actually installed Vista Premium from that DVD, with media center and the new GUI (Aero?) and all that.

How and why did it let me install Home Premium from Home Basic DVD? Did they stuff wrong DVD in the box? Confused!

I did not activate it yet and not planning to activate it any time soon because that machine is for my LinuxMCE and I just wanted to test Sony DVD changer in Vista. So I do not know if it will fall back to Vista Home once I activate.

You can not activate it without a HP key. All Vista installation media are the same and they allow you to install any version for a free 30 day trial period. You will have to reinstall Home Basic in order to use your key to activate Windows.

Edit

I am assuming you bought Home Basic though you did not specifically say so in your post.
