Vista Hard Freezes

Anyone else getting them? My computer just randomly locks up. Mouse/kb/everything freezes. No sound looping. This happens on the desktop while idle, for some reason when I'm playing games things don't really freeze.

I have the following specs:

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3R
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
CORSAIR CMPSU-520HX 520W ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 PSU
eVGA GeForce 8800GT 512MB

I had a creative fatal1ty xtremegamer sound card, which I thought was the cause, so I removed it and went to onboard sound. It worked fine for about a week and now it's locking up again. I ran memtest and my RAM passed all of it, so I don't think that is the issue either.

Anyone know what might be causing the hard freezes? I doubt it's the cpu or motherboard. Is vista just shitty and freezes a lot and I should re-install XP?

Do you have all the latest updates from microcrash. Are you running 64 bit vista or 32 ? There is a vista sp2 beta Im running it has resolved alot of my little glitches.

Sounds like it tries to go into sleep mode or stand by and wont wake up, the up dates my help also check gigabyte for a bios update hope this helps.

Oh make sure you have your chipset software installed for the os you are using this can cause your issue. If you are just running off the os install there is alot of stuff that may kinda work until you get the chipset software in it.

I have the latest windows updates and all my drivers updated (including chipset drivers), motherboard bios flashed, etc etc etc so that's not the issue.

I am running Vista 64-bit.

This isn't an issue with going into sleep mode or standby, as it can be idle for 30 seconds and it will freeze. I've had it freeze just surfing the web, burning a DVD (annoying), or copying files around.

I've had a similar problem with my Vista Business x32 desktop PC. It worked flawlessly for about five months and then something happened. I get hard freezes, without warning and with no Events or memory dumps ever recorded. This happens, on average, twice a month on a PC that runs 24/7. This has continued for seven months now.

Like you, I've done multiple tests of the memory and hard drive, have updated all drivers, and I've removed all the hardware and software that I believe might possibly be the cause. Other than games (which aren't running at the time of the freezes), there's very little sofware installed.

It's embarrassing that I haven't solved this one, since it's my personal PC. I was going to flatten it and re-install the OS (something that I normally wouldn't do unless it'd been hit by malware), but with Windows 7 getting close, I'm likely going to just leave it alone 'til W7 is RTM.

Humm ok sorry to see all the trouble your having see if this Microsoft patch has what you need here is a link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938194 This fix applies to the mentioned issue hope it helps Ill look all over hell to see if we can find a fix oh if you guys have nvidia cards you may want drivers for those straight from nvidia rather than oem unless they are evga those guys use nvidia drivers without oem mods.

All mods from evga are add ons.

Oh turn off C1E support in bios if you can this has stopped alot of people from having issues I OC my rig so I turn off all the power saving goodies right off the batt to get stable OC.
