So why?

No, you still have to reinstall your OS, along with all of your drivers, and a few apps like software firewalls and anti-virus. But, if you've got your apps on a second partition, they won't need to be reinstalled. There are of course exceptions to that rule (when aren't there exceptions to a rule??), but the vast majority won't need to be reinstalled, nor will they need to have all of their options changed, and any of them that required updating will still be updated.

Even w/ the registry being wiped clean w/ a new install of Vista/OS?

What about this...

Either using the backup/image part that comes in Ultimate or Acronis TrueImage, if I were to make monthly images, couldn't I then use THOSE as my "clean install" and then, boom, no need to reinstall anything?

Installing Vista over a previous installation of Vista gives you the option of moving everything from the old install to a seperate folder. I just move the stuff after I'm done and then delete the folder. I don't need 2 partitions anymore. :)

I've never used a ghosting program but it looks like a lot of people do.

I used to install programs on a seperate partition but I always had to reinstall them anyway when I installed a new OS.

Funny, I've never had to reinstall software that was installed on a separate partition, excluding M$'s Flight Simulator X, and I've never in my life used any ghosting application, nor any other type of backup app.
