vista freezes after password entry

My mom's computer is a compaq 6720s notebook.

When I turn it on it starts up in the normal fashion, but when I type the password and hit enter.....no response from anything.

I also tried shutting down the computer from the log on screen with the same results.


-Safe mode works fine

I have tried:

-system restore
-vista memory check
-startup recovery (not sure of the proper name but the startup "fixer" when pressing f8 on startup)

EDIT: Ran a startup test from the BIOS menu and it said hard disk 1 failed. I am now doing the acutal hard drive test from BIOS to give the HP support tech the info to get the replacement.
