Vista File Transfer/Copy Issue

I have Vista Ultimate x64 installed. I am trying to copy about 20 GB of files at a time. From a portable hard drive, connected via firewire, to an internal harddrive. The copy stage stalls out and refuses to cancel out. It just freezes and won?t respond I am forced to physically restart. What is going on? Has anyone had similar problems? It really only stops working when I touch anything opening up IE or messenger stops the transfer. Help!!
