Vista file sharing

I'm trying to set up some file sharing so I can get to an external hard drive hooked up to my desktop without having to physically disconnect it and hook it up to the computer, I'm really looking for something that is a bit more practical.

I tried setting it up myself, but I guess I got the permissions wrong or something... I don't know... anyone have any ideas?
