Every time I reboot my Vista system, I get the following error message in the Event Log (System section, Event ID 7026, Source: Service Control Manager Eventlog Provider):
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: i8042prt
From what I can tell from Google searches, this seems to be related to using a USB keyboard (and maybe mouse). Mostly, Google turns up discussions related to Windows 2000, though there are some references to XP. Does anybody know anything about this problem?

I just updated my chipset drivers today with the latest available from Intel. I have a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 rev 1 motherboard. I dual boot with XP and Vista, but the problem does not occur with XP. They keyboard works fine in both operating systems, but I'm concerned because Vista occasionally reboots for no apparent reason. The reboots may not be related to this problem, I don't know. The Device Manager says that the keyboard (and all other hardware) is working properly.

One suggested solution (that apparently worked for somebody using XP or 2003) was to do this:
Solution:

Step 1: Backup your Registry
Step 2: Open the key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters]
Step 3: Change the value Headless data to 0x1
I don't have that "headless" key in that location. Also, I tried to add it, but I couldn't put in "0x1" (it ignored the "x"), so I didn't save it.

Thanks in advance.

What is the model number of your keyboard? Do you happen to know what is the chipset for your USB on your mobo? It could be becuase of other conflict before the USB service initiate from the OS, and yes I do understand you tried from the XP OS, but registry and order for the services in vista should be different from other OSs. Correct me if necessary!
