Vista - driver issue? OS issue? hardware issue?

Running 32-bit Vista Business on a laptop.

The system has a fairly powerful dual-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, and a 7200rpm HDD with no S.M.A.R.T. issues. All drivers are the newest available. However, this means the audio drivers are rather old, being SigmaTel drivers from late 2007, but the laptop manufacturer does not provide newer drivers, and finding newer hardware-specific drivers for this OS is proving difficult.

The problem: If handling specific tasks while playing audio (locally) or streaming music online, the audio tends to stutter. And by that, I mean that after a stutter, it doesn't resume playing where it "should" be, but actually pauses for a split-second before continuing on. This means that if I'm listening to a live stream, I actually start to fall further and further behind as the stutters add up.

By specific tasks, I mean things like updating antivirus software, running Windows Update, or miscellaneous common tasks within the OS, such as opening a populated directory while running other applications on the side.

I strongly believe it's an issue with the drivers (which are almost as old as Vista itself, meaning it probably has issues, given the overall driver debacle with Vista when it was released). If so, does anyone know where to get reliable drivers (i.e. non-corrupt, and no malware or viruses) for the now defunct SigmaTel?

I know how to look up the Hardware ID of the SigmaTel hardware in question, but it's been almost useless so far.

Note: With normal multi-application use, RAM usage never seems to go above 1.8GB (average is probably around 1.45GB), so I'm fairly sure it's not a problem that is compounded by SuperFetch being overly aggressive (if that's even a potential issue, that is).

I considered that it might be a problem with how Vista itself handles tasks and schedules them (thread priorities or otherwise). If someone could address this matter as well, it would be interesting.

Mine is as follows:

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7616&SUBSYS_10280227&REV_1002
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7616&SUBSYS_10280227

So same vendor (as expected), but different devices entirely (though the drivers may work anyway, given they're likely not drastically different with this sort of hardware device, especially from the same manufacturer).

once files are extracted from the installer, open the inf file and check which hardware ids are supported by driver... or simply offer device manager to install new drivers and provide directory where files are extracted.

I went back to the link, and just "backtracked" more towards the root, to find drivers for my own laptop model.

How did you find this link by the way? I wasn't aware Dell had all their drivers available in such a fashion. I always went through the website links (manually where possible), but was never presented with such up-to-date drivers.

Note (EDIT1): the FTP site's drivers are the same as the ones I have, but they are version "A09", not "A03". I have no idea if this is a documentation typo, or something relevant.

EDIT2: so I installed the drivers, and they are indeed the same as the ones I already had (same driver version and driver date). FYI, the drivers used for either sound device are the same. Also, the stutter problem remains. :/

So I found another, newer set of drivers meant for the XPS M1330, but everything else checks out (hardware and OS).

R186858.exe
2/15/2008
6.10.0.5866

The stutter issue is still there, but noticeably less pronounced, and not as frequent. Unless I'm just perceiving it that way. This is a bit odd.

Apparently, this sort of thing only happens with Flash. I'm not sure why I didn't notice this before. Anything else (any program playing an audio file locally, etc.) does not stutter at all.

I haven't bothered trying it out with other browsers (yet, at least), but Chrome's built-in Flash player seems to be an issue. I wouldn't be surprised though if it's Flash in general, regardless of the browser being used.

Thanks, but the issue is with Flash (perhaps only within Chrome). See my last post.

Yes, the issue above always started with Flash playback for me. That's why I posted it. Definitely try a different browser so you know how wide-spread the problem is. Give us some addresses you are seeing the problems with.
