Vista Desktop icon sorting issue

I'm guessing somebody has a simple explanation for this, but google is proving unhelpful so I figured I'd ask.

When I save a file to my desktop in Vista, rather than going at the END of the list behind things, for some strange reason the file is showing up near the beginning of the list (right below my user folder) and "wedging" existing icons all down a spot. This doubly annoying because I'm used to looking for a file that I just saved at the end of the list, but also because I expect my Computer and Recycle Bin icons to always be in the same spot, and the files keep pushing them further down the list to new locations.

Anybody have any idea what's causing this?

Thanks.

Right click on the desktop and look at the view settings that's where you can choose different layouts for the desktop.

I'm looking at that, but not seeing anything that changes the behavior i'm noticing. Listed there are all the options from Windows of yore (auto arrange, align to grid, etc), but I don't see anything that would disable automatic sorting (which is what I'm after - Auto Arrange itself don't bug me, though disabling it didn't have any effect on my issue).

You need to turn off auto arrange and align to grid I believe to get complete control of the desktop layout.
