Vista deleted files off desktop

Bought a brand new laptop 2 days ago, wife took it to work copied files to the desktop, got home drug some more files from the external drive to the folder on the desktop, then this morning on the first restart all the files are gone.

Not being familiar with vista I am not exactly sure where to look, but we did look in the desktop folder under users. We also made sure we were not on a temp profile. Anyone have any other ideas? We have done searches also trying to find the files, but can't

We can find the folder that contained the files but it says it is empty, but also says the files may exist on the netork or on the hard drive....
Message says this

it sounds like she made a shortcut to whatever this folder is. I think all windows OS's do this when you drag and drop folders to the desktop.

Took 25 min to do what she did and I just tested it with my external and you can drag and drop just fine. Now maybe vista actually doesn't work this way but xp does.

tried search?

edi: might get some clues if you right-click on that folder and select properties, it sounds to me like it thinks the folder is a network location. Also, check c:\users\ for another profile (vista can have some weird habit where it likes to think files you copy from My Docs on one PC still belong to that user on the new pc, when I tried copying files from my xp install on the second drive i had to go in as admin and change permissions so that my Vista account now owned the files...)

yeah tried doesn't matter I formatted and install xp, not much into learning vista because xp does everything I need thanks though for the replies
