Vista Defrag has stopped

I can access the file, I get the admin right asking me If I want to run it. I say yes an dnothing happens...

I usually do a defrag once a week. I installed a massive amount of software and I really do not want to go back to a system restore point. Any ideas what could be causing Vista Defrag not to work?

Someone can correct me if Im wrong, but I believe that vista is set up so that Defrag can be run constantly in the background (and not while you are doing stuff) So basically when the computer is on and not it use, it should defrag itself.

It doesn't run "constantly."

It will run on a specific schedule as defined in the defrag options. If it misses the scheduled time, say because of being in hibernation or because of a resource-intensive task occuring during the scheduled time, it will re-schedule itself when it detects idleness. Since defrag uses low priority i/o, you might run into a circumstance in which the machine is defragging in the background.

If the defrag fails to run on the schedule, check the event log or task scheduler to start and figure out why.

System restore shouldn't remove your installed programs, BTW.
