When trying to access the control panel in Vista it'll start to draw up and just dissapear.

I'll have to reboot hit F8 and select last know good config.

When it gets back into windows I can access the c.p.

I've tried system restore and that worked for awhile, but the problem comes back again.

Also, when I right click on the desktop and click on personalize it does the same thing.

NOD32 hasn't found any problems.

Windows Defender and Adaware haven't found anything either.

Windows is uptodate also.

Very strange..

Hello.

I have the exact same problem (and an almost identical system).

I strongly suspect nVIDIA is to blame. I have re-installed Vista several times. Each time, I have begun with either the nVIDIA 680i chipset drivers OR the video card (100.64). Without installing ANYthing else, I get a missing control panel. This means that v15 of the chipset divers AND 100.64 both have identically corrupting software.

I looked at Bob's suggestion but the nvcplui fix did not work for me. I think it no longer applies to the 100.64. I have yet to try replacing the other two files, though. It isn't abundantly clear to me how to go about that.

The 100.64 drivers are beta, I think. There's a link on nVIDIA's website to report driver issues. Maybe if enough of us complain to them, they'll fix it & roll out a new driver.

Side note for Don66: when you run DXDiag, is your DDI version 10 or 9ex? My 8800 keeps saying 9ex. Shouldn't it be 10?

Cheers,

d

FYI,

I recently re-downloaded & re-installed v15 of nVidia's 680i chipset. So far, after maybe 10 restarts, there hasn't been a problem. Fingers crossed that I didn't jinx myself here.

Cheers,

d

EDIT: Unfortunately, after several more restarts, this has revealed itself not to be the solution.

Try the 101.41 drivers. many people have reported better success with them

Cheers, Kaioshade.

Sadly, 101.41 reveals the same symtoms. I am beginning to wonder if it's a 8800-specific issue or a Vista Ultimate-specific issue. I am running two Vista systems, one as described and a lesser system on Home Premium with a 7800-series card with no problems.

There is no question in my mind, however, that nVidia is responsible for this error. I reinstalled Vista Ultimate on my clean (reformatted) disk numerous times. Each time, the video driver OR the chipset driver were the FIRST things I installed (after I let Vista update). Immidiately, there was a missing control panel with either.

This is the price we pay to be on the bleeding edge, I suppose.

Cheers, anyway.

Mine shows DX10

Dostoyevsky77 Could be your overclock is too high?
At one point I O/Ced too high and Vista gave me some dll error and then the CP refused to open.
I've since reinstalled Vista and have had no problems.

I had this problem and would resolve it with system restore. I reformatted and I haven't seen it since. When I was having the problem I was at 3.2 and am now at 3.0

I scaled-back my OC and reinstalled Vista, but I'm still having the problem with the control panel.

Don66, just to confirm... when you run DXDiag, your DDI version says 10? My DX VERSION is 10, but the DDI version is reporting 9ex...

Anyway, I guess I'll hope someone else comes up with a solution to my control panel problem. Thanks anyways.

Similar issue here except I can get the control panel to show up but if I click on uninstall program BSOD that shows a memory dump error. PC specs below, I'm running Nvidia 100.65 drivers and Vista Ultimate

I'm running 7800GT with 100.65 drivers and Vista x64 HP,no problems with control panel ,you may be right about 8800 being the common denominator,we need more feedback from users with the problem.

If any of you are still having this problem, a workaround is posted over here:
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=27571

1) Launch services.msc from a run command
2) Find the SLUNotify service & stop it
3) Find the Software Licensing service & stop it (it may say that ReadyBoost needs that service to run; stop it anyway)
4) Restart both services, starting with Software Licensing

That's all. No reboot needed. Kudos to Toby at the nVidia forums.

Thanks, Dostoyevsky77, that worked. Looks like someone's control panel applet has startup problems and is running afoul of the Vista licensing scheme.

On my machine (our systems could be twins but for the case, ps, and hard drives), the SL UI Notify service was not running. When I stopped the Software Licensing service, the control panel now starts up, but it's completely empty. This seems to be in line with the Vista "reduced function mode" if the service is not running. I then restarted the Software Licensing service and now the control panel starts up with all the normal applets present.

While not a good long term solution, it at least gets me past this roadblock.

Oh, and the Desktop Personalize option is now working again, since that's simply a shortcut into the Personalize control panel applet.

My problem started happening shortly after I used Windows Update to install the nVidia drivers for my EVGA 8800GTX. I haven't tried downloading the most recent drivers from nvidia itself, although I may be doing that this weekend, my 2nd EVGA 8800GTX is here, so I'm fixing to go SLI.

Looks like I'll be heading over to the nvidia forums to do some poking around.

traced down the culprit finally. Its the creative Vista drivers. Don't know why this is happening to me and not others. Or maybe its the combo of the beta Nvidia drivers + creative's latest drivers.

When I remove the creative drivers I get control panel back, and when its installed I lose it. Wish I knew how to fix this for good.

I have an 8800. Prior to that I ran a 7800GTX and ran into a similar startup problem. It was the nVidia driver.

I updated the driver and all was well. It was a bit puzzzling for a while though...

Hey, all. I have been suffering this problem since before I first posted & must admit, I've had a really good run of things. I was recently working on a new overclock, so I was restarting a whole lot & every single restart, I've been alright. Here's what I did:

1) Fresh install of Vista followed by 15.08 chipset = much more frequent requirement to restart Software Licensing...
2) Installed all my usual programs = no amelioration of the issue
3) RE-install of 15.08 (on TOP of previous install) solved everything for the first time ever...

As I say, I've been working on a new OC & I've been restarting a LOT & 100% so far, I'm aces. I don't understand it & imagine it won't work for everyone, but please try it & let me know. I doubt it had anything to do with reinstalling Vista, so just try installing 15.08 over itself.

Cheers,

d

I just began with this problem as well. Wondering if there are any updates from those who have possibly fixed it. I refuse to DL windows patches from the above link as it just doesn't seem as safe as I'd like. I did find what seemed to be an article in MS' support channels that may be a possible hotfix, but MS must be contacted and then the customer is emailed the hotfix so I'll be awaiting that in the mean time.

1) Launch services.msc from a run command
2) Find the SLUNotify service & stop it
3) Find the Software Licensing service & stop it (it may say that ReadyBoost needs that service to run; stop it anyway)
4) Restart both services, starting with Software Licensing
This does work for the quick fix though, I'll report back if no one else responds when I get an email from MS.
