I upgraded the hard drive of my laptop and cloned my Windows partition over to it. When I first booted it up, it asked me to run check disk. It usually does this when you clone drives. However, it gets about two thirds of the way through the scan and freezes. I've let it sit for an hour and it just stays stuck. If I cancel the scan, Windows boots up and runs just fine. It's just annoying having to cancel it each time I boot into Windows now. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit.

Any ideas why it's doing this, or is there some way I can just shut it off?

If you don't have a copy of SpinRite 6, snag one from a friend and run it in Mode 4.

Depending on the size of the disk, it may take 4-5 hours in that mode, but will locate and correct most disk errors. If it finds ANY sectors that it cannot correct in that mode, it might be worth it to look into RMAing the new drive.

Once you have done this reconditioning/repair process, it should have a better chance at completing CHKDSK /R.
