Vista Business

My boss just bought a retail boxed Vista business and I'm wondering if it can be installed over Windows XP Pro installed on a computer or must the hard drive be formatted and start fresh?

Also, I see on the box there are minimum supported requirements which the computer in question is slightly underweight......will it even install on said computer if the specs such as ram and processor are underweight?

Thanks for any and all help.

Vista upgrade paths They say you can do an in-place upgrade.

As far as specs and stuff, (1) run the Vista Upgrade Advisor to make sure the hardware, software & peripherals will be OK, and (2) if it were me, I'd want 2GB of RAM, or at least 1GB. If it only has, say, 512MB and onboard video is taking a bite out of that, it's probably going to be struggling.

Thanks very much.....I haven't been keeping up with the vista OS at all....

Does Vista have to be activated within 30 days of installation like you used
to do with XP Pro?

Generally yes, but you can use the SLMGR trick to get another 90 days (in 30 day increments).

In the handful of systems we have upgraded to vista for people, all have had some sort of issues. In the end a number of sites recommended against using the upgrade over XP path.

There is a way to get vista upgrade to install to a blank drive if you wanted to do it that way. Though without meeting the hardware requirements, you Windows experience is going to be slow.
