Vista Boots and Shuts down slow

I recently installed Vista 32 bit Home Premium. So far, I have installed very little and it is running pretty stable and fast. The only problem I have run into is that my system boots up pretty slow and it shuts down slow too. It takes well over a minute to perform either task. I installed Vista by formatting my drive and applying a fresh install to avoid complications. The only thing that I have installed so far are updated drivers from Nvidia's and Asus's website, all available windows updates, and World of Warcraft. There are barely any programs that need to be loaded during start up nor are there many programs to end during shutdown. I have also disabled the side bar which I heard may shave off a few seconds. The specs for my system are the following:

Motherboard: ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe Nvidia nForce 590 SLI chipset
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600 Socket AM2
Memory: CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 7800GT 256MB
Hard Drive: Western Digital 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache
Sound: Onboard sound. SoundMax

I am also using ReadyBoost with the recommended thumb drive that is mentioned in the stickied post about Vista tweaks. Overall, with these system specs, I assume that I shouldn't be experiencing any performance limitations due to my hardware. So, why does it take a while for my system to boot up and shut down? Has anyone else experienced this problem and found a solution?

Use the sleep button that is default in the start menu. Solves both issues and gives you one less click.

Thanks Smilin! I will try that when I get home. However, that is more of a workaround than a solution. If possible at this point, I would like to find a way to reduce the boot up time and shut down time. I am also more interested in learning about the boot up times since I know they will increase as I use my system and install additional software.

I don't think those times are necessarily way out of line. My machine takes a minute or two to fully boot but shutdown times vary greatly. Sometimes the machine will take only a minute or so but sometimes it just sits there for 3 or 4 minutes before it finally decides to shut itself off. I don't know what it is waiting for because most of the time, I don't even see any hard drive activity.

It's possible that this is normal with Vista although it would surprise me. I do know that it took XP on my same machine about 30 seconds less to boot. One thing that I noticed is that after the first few times I booted Vista, the loading of the desktop itself was extremely fast. I imagine this is due to Superfetch and I am very pleased with it. So, I believe that whatever is causing the slow boot times has something to do with loading the OS itself. If anyone knows of some tweaks which have improved boot or shutdown times then I would like to hear about them.

One other possibility (this might be a long shot) is the BIOS. I am currently using the latest BIOS release version 0706 which was posted by ASUS on 10/4/2006, but I also see that they have a beta release 1001 which was posted on 03/19/2007. I have a pretty good understanding about how the BIOS works, but I lack experience with comparing performance results using different BIOS versions. I am hesitating installing a beta BIOS since I understand that Vista is fragile right now too. However, if anyone has more experience with this sort of thing and can provide some insight then I would like to hear what you have to say.

You might want to check out the Event Viewer to see what is slowing down the boot/shutdown process.

Start -> Event Viewer

Then in the tree view, select:

Applications and Services Log > Microsoft > Windows > Diagnostics-Performance > Operational

Then sort the task category and look for Boot Performance Monitoring or Shutdown Performance Monitoring. You'll likely see a lot of warnings, so you'll have to lok at the total time to see what's really taking a lot of time.
