After the latest round of windows updates, it needed to reboot my system and after that it boots to a quick blue screen and then reboots and this happens in all modes. I tried the Vista startup repair and it could not fix the problem. It says

Root casue found:

"A recent driver installation or upgrade may be preventing the system from booting"

Any way to uninstall those updates?

Any other ideas?

Edit:

Stop error is:

verification of a known dll failed

Assuming you had System Restore turned on, Google for instructions on how to restore the system to an earlier state. I think it's another one of the options on the Vista repair console.

I wish I did, however... :(

Tried all modes available in F8 with the same result. I was on the phone with MS for two hours this morning and it ended with no resolution. He is supposed to be having a senior level tech call me tomorrow. In the mean time he told me to back up my data...yippee. I found one other person that has Vista Ultimate and is in the same position after downloading updates.

Ouch, there's a tough lesson to learn.:( There's just not much you can do without system restore, turning it off means very little is kept other than immediate backups of the registry. On a modern machine the overhead on system restore is negligible, you really should leave it on in the future.

Did you install one of the updates for SP1 readiness? I believe the number is KB937287.

In my situation the BSOD was a STOP 0x0000007B which was caused by an older, bugged msahci.sys file. I have copies of fixed versions if you need them.

That's sound ominous...do you remember exactly when the update occurred? I did a manual full update on Sunday after doing a clean reinstall on a new drive, without apparent ill effect. Not sure if there was any update on Monday though.

Oh, and system restore has indeed saved my skin a few times after drivers installation FUBARs :) (thank you ATI, thank you Creative :|). Would never turn it off.

It was the SP1 readiness updates. My stop error is slightly different but hey, it's worth a shot. I have looked through the setupapp.dev.log until my eyes were sore with fatigue.

I had a "pro" level MS tech call me last night and it was the most useless 10 minutes of tech support I have ever received. This is after two hours with a separate tech. He told me the suggestion was to reinstall. Gee thanks allot.

Thank you!
