Vista+ATI x1400 Dell 6400=no login screen?

This is a weird problem, clean install of Vista Business on a Dell Inspiron 6400, I installed the ATI x1400 drivers from dells website for vista. When I rebooted, it loaded up and did the little vista logo and then went to a black screen. If i put the computer into standby and then leave standby the login screen appears no problem whatsoever... I ran all the updates, any ideas?
