Vista and Windows 7 – which on HTPC, which on desktop?

So I've been happy with Vista on my desktop for a couple years now. I'm going to build a new HTPC and buy Windows 7. The question is: should I install Windows 7 on the HTPC and keep Vista on my desktop, or install Vista on the HTPC and install Windows 7 on the desktop?

The HTPC will be for recording HD tv over the air, as well as a media server and eventually some simple games. The desktop is for first person and other games, as well as video and picture editing.

Thoughts?

Find a way to get another cheap copy of Windows 7. 🙂

Personally, My Movies 4 works so well in an HTPc setup that it's hard not to recommend, but it's windows 7 only. And there are a lot of useful features in Windows 7 that make it a much better OS to use in day to day tasks.

I would recommend installing Windows 7 on whichever computer you use the most. Vista is still a very good OS, and can still support weaker hardware.

Since the main role for HTPC computer would be to play movies, the 'snappiness' of an OS does not matter. So, Vista for HTPC seems like a more logical choice. 🙂

I second this, but also add that Vista's Media Center recordings are sometimes easier to work with because they're an older format. I seem to remember reading at least one other thing that made me glad Vista was on my HTPC but can't for the life of me remember what it was.

I say, if you have the extra license, there is nothing wrong with going to 7 on the HTPC, though there is no problem with sticking with Vista either. My personal preference is to use the latestversion that supports everything I need it to do, so 7 fits the bill.

I'm using 7 on my Media Center But I don't record OTA TV, I have a Ceton Cablecard Tuner, which has been fantastic since I installed it 14 months ago.
