Vista and "uninstalling"???

Hello,

Sorry to be so dumb. My boss just bought me a MSDN licence and it came w/ every version from Vista Home to Vista Enterprise. I'm interested in installing it and trying it out but had a question. I remember a long time ago before Vista came out there was a bug huff about installing/activating it. Microsoft later said that Vista could be ported to another PC (for the PC enthusiasts) however it had to be "un-installed" on any other PC that had the installation before it.

Does anyone know what MS ment by uninstalling it?

Just wondering in the event I want to try it out... and then later on have to go back to XP (company standard) and still want to be able to use the licence later on in case I need it.

Thank you!

Basically, you can only have it installed on one system at a time. If you want to put your Vista license on a new box, you should install a different OS on the old one.

Note that if it is an OEM license, you are only supposed to install it on one system and then you can't move it to a new one. But I don't think the MSDN licenses are considered OEM.

Thanks.... I remeber XP had a rule w/ activating where after you install it 3 times on a PC, you had to call up MS. Does this still apply w/ Vista or can I install/activate Vista on the same machine 300 times and never have to contact MS?

I don't know that there was ever a hard limit in XP about three activations.

You may have to call in if you reactivate it repeatedly over a short time period or make very extensive changes to the hardware. It's not different from XP in this regard (or, really, in any of the licensing/activation).

If you reinstall too often you will have to call in. That said, MSDN (at least the higher end subscriptions) include keys for 10 test machines. So your unlikely to run into the issue.
