According to Starforce's website their software is fully certified with Vista. However, I'm reading that some games with starforce are having issues? The one game in particular is Space Rangers 2.

Anyone running older games with Starforce protection in Vista?

If you must install Starforce, personally I would only install the Vista certified Starforce drivers for Vista, guess its down to how bad you want to play Starforce protected games.

I wonder if these game developers realize that some people will deliberately avoid starforce protected games simply because of it? I'm guessing they do realize it but they also know that those who know of starforce's suckiness are not enough of a factor to worry about.

Hey, does this entail going to Starforce site and downloading thier lateset software before installing the game?(with its older starforce drivers?)

You can download latest version of Vista Starforce drivers from their homepage, when you install an old starforce protected game it should detect you have the Vista Starforce drivers already installed (provided you installed them).

Yes they do.

There was an article in one of my gaming magazines about it. There was a big surge in starforce games but now the backlash is so bad that new games released with starforce run a big risk of market failure. Publishers are starting to avoid it like the plague.

Yeah, I'd avoid a starforce game at this point. I don't like the idea of resident protection. Imagine if every app you used required some resources and memory allocation for copy protection. Awful.

I understand your point however I'm dying to play this game.

Just an idea:
Set up a dual boot between Vista and Vista. Install the game only on one.
Use the other Vista for everything else.
This would be much easier if you only had the OS on one partition and everything else (data and may be even programs and games) on another partition. Then, you would only need another small OS partition (10GB) as opposed to a large one.

There is System Restore on Vista too,I think the Vista cert Starforce drivers should be ok.

Well, according to the starforce site, if the starforce version is higher then 4.00.013 than you are OK, otherwise consult mfg. for update. Of course, the people that made Space Rangers are bankrupt so there are no patches. The US producer has no info on patches.

Oh well, I'll just try and use the latest starforce and see what happens.

You just need to upgdate the starforce driver to a newer version than the game would install. This can be done seperately after you install the game and doesn't require any specific support from the game AFAIK.

Edit: and yes, Starforce is Evil.

Isn't it freaking sad that a *LEGIT OWNER* of a game has to jump through hoops in order to play his game? I don't have a problem with developers protecting their products but when it intrudes on my system or causes headaches that's a different story. That said, if I had the option of purchasing a game with starforce or getting it via warez (if possible) I'd choose the latter.

True, I had an issue with roller coaster tycoon three which I bought. I could not get the game to run for the life of me until I used a hack on some no-cd site....very sad...

I never steal software, I consider it an investment for my future entertainment...
