Native support - Vista got rid of the entire install software and instead went with a runtime OS that loads off the DVD which then images your hard drive.

Theoretically does that mean I could just copy a Vista OS partition to another computer with a different I/O controller and it would still work? Besides the fact that the hardware changes would make it go bonkers.

It might work. I can't say for sure
