Vista and Knoppix both refuse to load the pcmcia driver

I'm running into the issue where vista BSOD's when attempting to load the pcmcia.sys file. i am trying to launch knoppix and recover some files before i nuke it, but knoppix also hangs when it reaches the line "PCMCIA Found, starting cardmgr. is there something physically wrong with my pcmcia slot? is there a way i can get the setup to skip pcmcia detection but maintain usb detection?
