Vista and Hard Drives

i am running Vista Ultimate with 2 hard drives. vista is running off of an 80 gig drive and i have a 200 gig drive being used for storage. for some reason vista keeps shutting off and the turning back on the second drive( i am assuming its the second drive only because i am using my computer during this time and programs that are installed to the primary drive will still load while the other drive is spinning up).

it will turn it off and back on again several times for seemingly no reason at all. this concerns me because i don't want it to ruin my hard drive. if it was only once in a while i would not be concerned at all but it is doing it a lot.

so my question is, is anyone else experiencing this? how can i make it stop. looking at power setting and whatnot i don't see any reason why it should be turning that drive off. i have it set for 1 hour of idle before turning off the hard drives. where else can i check for setting that would turn the hard drive off. any suggestions will be appreciated. thanks

EDIT: woops i just realized i post this in software for windows. i thought this was for windows itself. will a mod please move this to the correct forum. sorry

Control panel/ System and maintenance/ power options/ change settings/ change advanced settings/ Hard drive/ turn off after: never

I had problems with update KB938979 causing this. If Rebel44's suggestion doesn't work, or you'd like the drives to shut down sometimes, try uninstalling that update.

i had the hard drive set to 1 hour before. i set it to never and i will see if that helps. i am leary about uninstalling that update because that was the one that gave a bunch of speed increases. i noticed it especially for file transfers and copies. i kinda would like to keep that update installed. but if i have to i will uninstall it so my hard drive doesn't get ruined. has anyone else noticed this problem

btw. after a little googling i found a thread on microsoft's site about the update causing this exact problem. so i guess that is it then. that sucks. thanks for letting me know about that. i never would have guessed it on my own. i appreciate it.

I don't think this would "ruin" your hard drive.

Dropping it on a tile floor that was recently mopped with bleach would.

By the time this apparent bug is solved, your HD will be no more worse off, IMHO.

Maybe, but I don't like the idea of my hard drive starting up from a dead stop every 30" or so. I'm sure it decreases the lifespan. It might not be significant, but still... I also don't like hearing the whine as they start up. It's a small noise for sure, but I notice it every time.
