Vista Aero & Gaming Performance

Does Aero take a hit off of gaming performance?

Err, why would it? Presuming your in full screen mode, the aero UI isn't using any GPU resources...

I've decided since this is only going to be used for gaming, I'm just going to use Home Basic, and strip it down with vLite.

THANKS

If youre using it for just gaming, I don't see the point in Vista right now. Unless you have some DX10 games that we all don't. 😛

Well, like me, I just built a new machine and would rather install Vista now than shell out for XP then Vista later. Upgrading is enevitable.

vista turns aero off and switches to basic when you run games

Thankyou.
Finally the correct answer.

I honestly don't think people understand how well Vista manages resources compared to MS's legacy OSes.

The whole tweak/strip down etc. thing simply isn't ideal or necessary in Vista in the majority of cases.

Aero has no impact on gaming performance however poor vista drivers do.

I have been quite impressed with quality of drviers, btw Nvidia have only just started working on performance part of the drivers(they went with stability first).

Well DX10 games are just around the corner, so I don't really see any point of playing half a dozen games, get all the "Saves" going, then resintall the OS, and mess with all of this when DX10 does come.

Figured I might as well put in Vista.

I thought too that at this point in time the gaming performance had improved, so that it's not as bad as it was in the very beginning.

I still hear a mixed bag of reviews, some say gaming is just as good as XP, then there are others that say it's not...

ALOHA

Still waiting on those nforce3 drivers from them, currently their Vista drivers are:
Version: 4.64
Release Date: July 29, 2005
Alpha Driver

Vista actually has incredible performance, but everyone disses it because they try using it with 1GB of ram and then try to game. The recommended is 2GB for a reason, upgrade to at least the recommended settings, then you can bash it...but I highly doubt you'll have a reason to.

Well, I have 4GB in my Vista box with a 4GB ReadyBoost USB drive and the HDD constantly still spins. It drives me nuts! I get apps that hang prior to loading, and can't even open my Yahoo Mail without having to allow it to load.

There's issues with many freeware apps I use which I doubt anyone will rewrite because they're several years old, but still did the trick. Now I'll have to spend hours upon hours to find stuff that actually works with Vista.

It'll be a matter of time before Vista is really ready for mainstream. Until then it's just a tinker toy.

Given your symptoms, something is wrong on that box. Now I don't know if it's an infection, a bad driver, a bad app, etc. But your description is certainly not one of an average Vista experience. I realize that it must be frustrating, but your taking your bad experience and applying it to all vs realizing you have some edge case which needs to be solved.
