Vista 7-900M mem usage, normal ?

Just as the title says.

I bought a new laptop with vista home premium on it, using it for work and 2gigs(core duo) will do fine in my scenario ...
I've heard all the rumors, so i did expect some .. resource hogging, but holy damn!
Not only did it use 900+ megs out of the box! but it lagged too .. as in the system will freeze from time to time, mouse frozen for a few seconds every minute or so.
So went through the usual suspects in the registry and disabled all the third party crap such a system usually ships wth, and now its ONLY hogging a little over 700megs out of the box.
Still experiencing the freeze-lag though!

Is this normal ? for a vista system ?

I am running eclipse and a little database server on it when developing!

The memory usage is normal since the memory management subsystem has been completely revamped. The memory is instantly freed if needed so in that regard it'll perform like XP. However, if you're fortunate enough that the used memory contained a cached copy of whatever you're trying to load, you get the pleasure of SuperFetch and save disk access.

The lag you're experiencing is not normal though. If this is a retail laptop and you have the Vista DVD that is supposed to come with it, I'd recommend you do a format and clean install.

aha .. that sounds nice. However id like the taskmanager to reflect this cause(subtract freeable cache), as you point out, the values it is reporting is really not useable in a regular fashion,. is there a way to do this?

Mouse should never freeze so its not normal for ANY OS,I would try a reformat that way you can be sure all the bloatware is removed, also it'll help you track down the problem too with all the unwanted software/drivers removed via a clean install.

well, the problem with reinstalling is that you can only revert to 'factory settings' ie. WITH all the bloat .. these laptops ship with the vista install program on disk on a seperate partition, and if you want a hardcopy you can make a backup of that. sucks big time imo, but thats it.
Ill investegate the mouse issue further.. thanks for the replies 🙂
