Im just getting up yo speed with my new I7 build. had XP in old system. Now Im on Vista Ultimate 64 bit.
Defrag in XP was always worthless so I used disk keeper then.

what about vista defrag? when I went to it the only thing I could find to do was to schedule it or manual defrag now. No analyze and when I start it it just says defraging, no chart, even xp defrag had analyze option and a chart.
Am I missing something? since im new to vista maybe there is a option to enable analyze option and show chart?

So is Vista defrag worth using or should I use a third party defrag?
What are you guys using?

Yeah, the interface on Vista 64bit while defrag is not informative at all. It shows no status, no progress status...nothing!

If your interested in third party defrag softwares you can look into these:

1. Auslogics Disk Defrag
2. Diskeeper 2009
3. JkDefrag (Free)

I liked diskeeper but its only for 32bit systems and I couldnt get it to work, I dont know anything about the other 2 programs

Just use the built in defragger. You don't need to know the statistics of fragmentation levels. Schedule it to run when you're not at the machine, and don't worry about it.

It is a 32bit program, although the website says it will work with 64bit, It wont work for me and I havent found a patch for it either as of yet

So is Vista defrag worth using or should I use a third party defrag?

You've almost assuredly wasted more time thinking about it than you'll ever save by defragging with any piece of software.

I recommend the command line defragger - "contig.exe" from sysinternals.com.
Then you can specify exactly what files/directories you want defragged, or run "contig -s -v *" from C:\ and see lots of details scroll by while it defrags your whole C drive.

Plus you can run it on multiple drives at once, unlike the windows GUI defragger.
