Vista 64 very slow browsing

I've just formatted (twice now cause I thought maybe there was wrong with the first installation) my Vista 32 SP1 PC and put 64 on, did all the latest updates.
Everything works great.

My main problem that I need help for is that my internet speed is playing up
real bad. I can browse and do what I want at normal speeds but as soon as
I start downloading anything my internet slows down to an unbearable pace,
web pages take so long to open that I have to cancel my download

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Did you have same problem in 32bit version?

Are you downloading via torrents?

Do you have iTunes installed? (one of my frends had same problem which was caused by this POS from Apple)

Thanks for the reply. No I didn't have this problem with 32bit.

Yes I am using utorrent.

No I don't have itunes installed

Using utorrent is going to wreck your browsing speed unless you have packet scheduling / shaping on your router. My recommendation is to get a Linksys WRT54G/GL/GS, Buffalo WHR-G54S/WHR-HP-G54, and install Tomato on it.

Alternately if you don't mind spending some bucks, you can go with a gamefuel router, which also allows prioritizing of packets.

One other thing I would suggest is install one of the Vista widgets that shows network usage. Verify that your network connection is acting as it should be; run some tests on it to confirm that your network usage isn't getting hammered by something else.

What I found was happening to me was that uTorrent was maxing out the number of simultaneous connections that Vista allowed for; I found this out by combing through my event log. I would also recommend that you comb through your event log to see if any suspicious activity is going on. Keep in mind that running the widgets with RSS feeds and such can use up network connections along with uTorrent.

I don't use widgets or desktop sidebar at all, but I do use Bandwidth Meter Pro, I never had this problem with utorrent on 32bit and I am using exactly the same settings now.

I just bought my router a couple days ago, don't know if it has packet scheduling, will have to have a look

This sounds like a router issue not an OS issue, make sure you have your router setup properly and possibly throttle back your torrents if you are having terrible browsing issues.

here's a link to change the max connections from 2 to 10
