Vista 64 unreasonably slow bootup

The biggest annoyance is a blinking cursor on the top right of the black screen when my Penryn system finshes POSTing and begins to boot. Takes around 30 seconds to go through this stage; no disk access appears to occur during this. After this ends, login and bootup goes as normal and the system just flies.

At one point, during my first install attempt, I found a tip on how to drastically reduce this stupid blinking stage but now I cannot find it again to save my life. So I lose 30 seconds of my life that I can never get back whenever I start this thing. It makes no sense.

Anyone out there got a solution? Absolutely nothing wrong with the computer. Thank you!
 
Have you tired without overclock? Also a solution is to not shutdown just sleep. Coming out of sleep only takes a few seconds.
 
A stall during the boot process might be an indication of a missing driver, incorrect driver or other hardware related issue.

Did you disable the Readyboost service by any chance? This service controls the Readyboot feature, which can speed up the boot process significantly.

I'll have to check that out (readyboost). Don't recall messing with that... Far as I know I have no driver issues, but that doesn't mean there aren't any.

In fact, that's what I usually do. Sleep mode in Vista works excellently. But if I leave for more than a day I prefer to shut it off.

If you have blank cursor, it is not vista but BIOS issue. It might be problem with hard drive configuration.
 
Doubt it; it's running brutally fast otherwise. Disk striping rocks.

I note ReadyBoost is irrelevant here. It's used only for limited-memory systems, with a flash drive. Memory is not my problem here.

SuperFetch is enabled by default.

I jsut might have to live with this issue; sleep mode definitely helps and I use it a lot.
 
-If you have a G15 keyboard it's a well known vista default driver problem ,
-a work around is to make the keyboard in the device manager - load a HID driver
-google - 30 sec black screen boot with G15 keyboard -
-there are no keyboard drivers NEEDED for the G15 . per Logitect,s site

You may be right! I think my keyboard's a Microsoft model, which would be funny if that turns out to be the case. Thanks. I'll follow that up when I get back to my desk on Thursday. I can also check my device manager for any other problematic devices.

It is anything but irrelevant! As nerp stated, the ReadyBoost services controls ReadyBoot, which substantially reduces startup time. That is a secondary function on the same service that hosts the thumbdrive caching feature. Of course, you say you never messed with the service so this is neither here nor there.

Just as an aside though, turning off ReadyBoost (and thus ReadyBoot) can double your start-up time.
