Vista 64-bit - Windows Update Issues

Intstalled Vista 64-bit Ultimate yesterday and am having some interesting issues with Windows update. Basically, 18 or so of the "critical" updates failed to install. There is, apparently, no way for me to request Windows update to attempt to reinstall the "failed" patches nor do they show up again as available for download.

When I then go to MS Knowledge base, follow the link for the update in question, manually download the x64 Vista version of the patch and try to install, it says that the update does not apply to my system.

Is this normal? This is my first Vista install so I admit to being a Vista noob. But seeing "critical" security patches having failed to install makes me nervous. Ideas?

If the update does not apply to your system, then I doubt anything is wrong. It sounds like you picked up the specific update as part of another patch.

If an update fails, it should give you the option to try again. If it doesn't apply to your setup, you shouldn't see it again.

Thanks for the replies. I'm assuming that, since I don't have an option to reinstall the "failed" updates they must not be applicable.

The failure was probably that autoupdate was already installing them. If you run windows update you get into a timing race with automatic updates since its there doing its job too.

Mech: thanks much for the link. Didn't know that existed and will check it out.

Bsobel: you're probably right. I ran Windows update and it probably conflicted with what it was already installing.
