Vista 64-bit SP1 Installation

After putting off installing SP1 for Vista (64-bit), I decided to take the plunge today. I should have listened to that little voice inside my head that said "don't do it, don't do it...".

Here's what happened:

SP1 dloaded with no issues (121MB for me) and proceeded to install. After what seemed like an eternity, I was prompted to reboot the computer, which I did. The computer rebooted and the Vista screen displayed a message stating that the updates was at Stage 1 of 3. The %-counter creeped upwards then BAM! Vista loads up to the desktop without the counter reaching 100%. Then within a few minutes, an error dialog box pops up telling me "Windows Modules Installer has stopped working" and keeps on popping a few minutes after I close the box each time.

I rebooted the computer several times to no avail but noticed that the %-counter continued where it had left off each time. Also, Windows Update showed the SP1 update "pending". After 6 reboots, I had had enough and did a System Restore.

I have all "Important" updates except for SP1 installed. Does anyone know how to remedy this situation? Edit: The error code I got was "800F0816".

Cliffs:
1. Tried to install SP1 for Vista 64-bit
2. Rebooted computer as prompted
3. Upon reboot, get "Windows Modules Installer has stopped working" message
4. Update to be performed after initial reboot will not finish before desktop loads
5. Did a System Restore
6. Is there a solution?

This may be of help:

1) Boot in Safe Mode, open SERVICES Window , stop Backgroung Intelligence transfer Service, Cryptographic Services, and windows update services.
2) Rename "Software distribution" folder located in C:/ Windows/Software distribution to 'Software distribution.old" and catroot2 in C:/Windows/System32/catroot2 to "catroot2.old".
3)Perform a clean boot in MSCONFID by unchecking "load startup items" and disabling all third - party services.
4)Check for "pending.xml" in C:/Windows/Winsxs folder and delete it.(Sometimes you may not be able to find it).
5) Remove any Security programs (*** Zone Alarm Security Suite ) and restart the computer and check for updates , once you see the SP1 update start installing it again. That shoul work without any issues.(If possible disable Firewall as well).

Thanks for the info. I had come across that while I was googling for possible solutions. I didn't try it before I posted here as I was not able to confirm that it works. On another note, can I obtain a Vista DVD with SP1 integrated from MS? I already have a license and SP1 is a free update so one would think it'd be possible no?

Edit: KB937287 failed to install properly on the first attempt but was successful on the second attempt a couple of months back. I never got the "endless reboot" issue with it though, so I don't understand why I can't get SP1 to install.

Edit 2: I tried the installation again, this time disabling all unnecessary services/programs from starting through MSConfig. SP1 still did not install properly and the Modules Installer error still pops up. I did notice however, that the error code is now 80242014. Unfortunately, there is no page for this on MS's website. Still looking for a solution...sigh.

Thanks for the link, I did not know that was available. I just sent them an email describing the problem and will wait for their response.

Hopefully the problem can be identified and fixed. I will post here if a solution is found so that anyone that may or have encountered this problem will have something to work from.

Ok, I entered a Easy Assist session as per the MS rep's suggestion. He looked around Windows Updates and Installed Updates and thought I had not installed KB935509, which is one of the 3 SP1 pre-reqs for Vista Ultimate 64. However, I did have all 3 installed. Finally he suggested I download and install the standalone SP1 file.

Unfortunately, it did not work for me. I still get the "Windows Modules Installer has stopped working..." error. If a MS rep can't figure out what is wrong, then where do I go next?

Just a quick update on the situation:

I finally got SP1 installed; however at the cost of starting new. On my 4th attempt, I had a MS tech on the phone who suggested I delete two temp folders and uninstall my antivirus package (avira). I followed these steps and attempted to install SP1 through Windows Update. The result was the same as the first 3 attempts - failure. After I told him so, the tech had me run KB647821, a tool that detected/repaired inconsistencies. This where things went downhill FAST. In the middle of the tool's scan, my computer automatically rebooted and after posting BSOD'ed. I only saw a flash of blue with some ugly error codes and the system was back at POST. This BSOD-reboot cycle prevented me from even booting in safe mode or using the last known working config. The only way to recover was to perform System Restore off of the Vista DVD. I did and was back on my desktop. This entire episode cost me nearly 3 hours and was on top of another 6 hours from earlier in the day and the previous afternoon!

After I booted up to desktop, I copied all of my files onto my external HDD. Since I had a second HDD intended for storage but had been unused, I decided to do a clean install of Vista and all of the updates before installing SP1. The clean install went without a hitch as did all of the updates. Finally, it was time for SP1. I clicked "Install" and it was out of my hands. Fortunately, after about an hour, I was rewarded with a successful installation of SP1!.

The weird thing is that I noticed that there were 3 instances of the "Windows Modules Installer" not working that were in the Problem/Error reporting history. Since they did not cause SP1 to fail during installation, I do not know why the errors appeared. Also, during my phone call I asked the MS tech if I can get a Vista DVD with SP1 integrated WITHOUT a license (I already have one obviously). His answer of "NO" astonished me since SP1 is a free download.

Cliffs:
1. Tried for the 4th time to install SP1
2. MS tech manages to BSOD my computer into a perpetual BSOD-reboot cycle
3. Saved by System Restore off of Vista DVD
4. Backed up data onto External HDD
5. Performed clean install on 2nd HDD
6. Installed updates with minimal drivers loaded (no video)
7. Installed SP1 successfully! (After spending literally an entire day)
