Is 4 or 8 gigs worth it for a serious gaming system using vista 64 home premium?

2GB should be fine...I have 32 bit vista/ E6600/8800 GTS and I have no lag in battefield 2 at 1600X1200 with 6x AA and everything set to high, I get about 80 FPS...

8GB sounds like over kill, unless your doing some monster video editing stuff or running 32899 VM's.

I'd spend more money on CPU/GPU set up, 4GB max should be your limit (Gaming anyway)

I have Vista64 with 4GB RAM and I think 4GB RAM is perfect for gaming in Vista.

My memory usage is often about 3GB ram because when I´m gaming I also have some apps running in background.

I'd suggest 4GB unless you have a clear need for more. 8GB has similar problems with many current chipsets that 4GB configurations had with chipsets from a few years ago.

My only thing is, will I see a difference with 4 gigs over 2 gigs in vista and gaming? If not then whats the point. I have always had 2 gigs.

Agreed.

64 bit is dead for now, until more applications really start supporting it. I'm very upset that Adobe CS3 doesn't have any 64 bit native apps, Premiere, Photoshop, and After Effects in particular definitely could have seen benefit from a native 64 bit app.

Don't even get me started on games on 64 bit :(

But yeah, 4GB for gaming on Vista x64, the damned OS uses so much!

Ca you still use them in 64bit. I use CS2 and Photoshop and dreamweaver. But if i cant use them in x64 then I dont want x64. I will jsut get 32 bit version and scale to 3 gigs.

Most people have no patience, and fear changes ... others embrace the change and adapt to it......

Vista 64X is like Two O/S's in one and what the operating system trys to do is default 32 Bit Program Files into Program Files(x86) this causes issues when attempting to install updates, patches etc...

The solution is to be more intelligent than the Operating System, and place the program files in the Root Program File Directory....that way the updates see the installation in the proper directory, and don't play stupid.....

The people that have problems with Vista 64x are typically not particularly technical, and have no common sense and are trying to use something that was not purpose designed for this kind of O/S period.

It does require that you pay attention to that file structure... but beyond that an O/S is an O/S...

One thing that you might consider for your New Build is this High Density Micron D9GSV
By Mushkin

Mushkin - Micron D9GSV High density 2x2 Gig.

It is a little more Cash Wise... but Leaves Two Slots Open.. on Your MOBO.. It is easier on the Memory Controller.

yea, the tech stuff is not a problem for me, infact figuring out work arounds is a bit of a game I enjoy. I might duel boot 64 and Xp if 64 is having a hard time with a few games or apps like dreamweaver and Indesign (GOD I HATE ADOBE). but in anyways, it will be fun to see. thanks for the information and all my games will go in the proper directory.

Having 4 gigs of ram is a must in Windows Vista 64 bit if your a medium to heavy gamer. I am using a good 3.5 GB of ram most of the time. Thats not for just one game though.
