Vista 5536 inside Ubuntu & VMWare server

Is anyone running the new build of Vista (5536) under Ubuntu with VMWare? I got it installed and things are running fine, although slow, all except for USB devices. I've got a VMWare WinXP Pro installed and I can plug my USB memory stick in and go (inside VMWare) VM | Removable Devices | USB Devices | (My USB memory stick) and it will open up the contents of the thumbdrive. I do the same thing in Vista and it never appears. It did run through the regular install procedure like it normally does for a new memory stick but that's it. No error and no workie. I did at the USB device in the virtual machine settings.

I haven't touched Vista and haven't tried doing fancy USB things in VMWare:

Anything in event viewer?

I looked through EV and found nothing that would indicate an issue with the USB stick. In fact, I plug in the stick and all it says is 'this device can perform faster if plugged into a USB 2.0 port blah, blah, blah' as though it installed fine. EV shows nothing good or bad after doing this. The stick doesn't show up in My Comptuer or Disk Management either.

I did see there's an update available for VMWare Server but I'm hesitant to update it because my WinXP Pro VM is running perfectly.

The 1.0.1 update is mainly to fix poor performance with 64-bit host machines. If you don't need it, don't bother.

Thanks for the heads-up. I do not need it on my T-42 then.

Maybe there's just something wrong in my Vista install or maybe this build had issues with USB devices? Or maybe a problem with VMWare & Vista? I'm probably going to blow away my 5536 build and install the RC-1 5600 build that was recently released...

Updating VMware's kernel drivers and GUI won't affect your virtual machine disks (vmdks). Type lsusb to make sure the USB device is being detached from your Linux host.

Prior to plugging the device in a lsusb command show it's (obviously) not there. After plugging and transferring to VMWare from Vista (where it doesn't work) the lsusb still shows it. From WinXP (where it does work) the lsusb command still shows it as well. Unplug it and it does not display in lsusb anymore.

Update: Tried the same memory stick with RC-1 (5600) and it didn't work either. This time I clicked the 'details' during install. It says:

Device driver software was not successfully installed

Please consult with your device manufacturer for assistance getting this device installed.

USB Mass Storage Device ------------------------ Failed

Note that this time I installed the USB port prior to creating the Virtual Machine.
