Vista 5308 won't install

I've been having a real problem with installing the last 2 major CTPs of Vista on my machine. Before you ask if the images are good, the MD5 checks pass and they will install without any trouble on my friend's machine.

Here's what happens... both x86 5270 and x86 5308 refuse to install. On 5270, from a clean install (not the setup run from windows) I get a pretty background, and then my computer freezes, the welcome setup screen never shows. If I do run the setup from windows, I have a similar result. On 5308 clean setup I get a loading bar, and then a blank screen, again without ever seeing the setup screen. I haven't tried the setup from windows for 5308 yet because I'm afraid it won't work again and i'll have a stupid BR that I can't easily change. I want to think that it has something to do with my sata drives. But if I disconnect them and leave my pata hd, i still get the same thing.

if you need model numbers, please ask, I'm too lazy to put them in

thanks,

AMD venice 3000+
2x 1gig OCZ ram
DFI Lanparty-UltraD
MSI GeForce 7800gtx
2x sata Samsung 160 (no raid)
1x pata Maxtor 200 gb
Audigy 2 zs
NEC 3540 16x DVD burner

lotharamious, what do you expect it's a BETA OS from Microsoft, that means, it's going to have limited hardware support is all. A Beta Windows OS is not going to run that great in this stage of development, that's all there is to it.

I had the thing installed and just about all the services killed and it still ran like a pig waddling through mud.

ALOHA

Have you posted your questions in the beta newsgroups? Someone there should ask you for your Panther logs.

I had something similar happen. My machine would get half way through the install, and then it would go back to the first menu that pops up.

What can you say? It's beta software. But I would however do what stash said... post in one of the MSDN newgroups and send them your panther logs.

Well I upgraded my test box from a Radeon 9600 to a GF 6600GT and get the black screen problem in trying to install 5308. I have seen other reports of the same problem on other forums. I tried both 32/64 bit versions so it seems like a dodgy driver for that card.

So I made a new partition on my main box, which has a 7800GTX and it installed fine.

So although 5308 + 6600 = Problem reported widely, I am not sure why it wont run on your 7800GTX. i also have a Audigy 2 ZS so it aint that, and I am using a Nforce 4 Fatality board board so guessing it aint the chipset either.

I got my DVD from connect.ms.com a few days ago; so far I've been unsuccessful in getting it going on a Dell 400SC.

What's a panther log?

Are you certain you are using a client key, not a server key? Server is not included in the image you downloaded, so a server PID won't work.

btw, the server ISOs will be released sometime in the next 24 hours or so if you want to install server. Staged builds are broken for server, which is why client and server builds are separate for now. So expect the server install to take longer.

Overall it aint too bad on the stability front. It seems that the 6600 is a problem but thats all and I have been on 3 different boxes now.

Stability in OS is OK, no more. Too many hung apps doing simple things atm, and network browsing is awful. But then I have drivers for virtually nothing atm and its similar on my new Gentoo box 🙂

Did you try the latest Vista drivers on Nvidia's website? Basically, the advice I've seen for people with Nvidia cards is to try the in-box drivers. If there are perf issues (stuttering, etc), upgrade to the latest from the website.

I had this problem too. Are you using a SATA hard drive? Disable your SATA drive in the BIOS, and boot from the CD. If it boots into setup (obviously, it will not find any drives), you know what your problem is.

Ah, looking at your specs now nForce4 SATA is the problem, I'm 99% sure. I'm using nForce 4 too, and I get the same problem. Use IDE or a SATA controller.

EDIT: Reread your post. Disable the SATA controller in the BIOS instead of just disconnecting them.
