Vista 512MB of ram

Trying vista on a older pc with only 512 mb of ddr ram but it has a pretty good processor not dual core but good enough. It doesn't run to bad. I thought it would of been worst. Some things do take forever though but not much. The only thing that a notice that really hurts it is after I installed KAV.

I've been fixing some laptops recently using Vista basic with 512mb ram.

It runs like crap, and took ages before I could actually get any work done on it.

1gb should really be the minimum.

Yeah. I am thinking of going back to xp or 2000 on this older pc sense it should run a lot better but I really don't game on this older pc so it may not be that much of a problem. Without KAV it was overall very speedy.

Vista with less than 1GB of RAM (specially on laptops with slower HDDs) is an excersice in despair, pain and utter frustration.

Slapping a 1 or 2GB readyboost stick can breathe new life into a 512mb laptop, even as a temporary fix while memory is in the mail. 😀

Thread title: "Vista 512MB of ram"...tsk, tsk.... Can't you just say MOLASSES? It's easier - one word, fewer painful memories...

Word!

Its usable, but I wouldnt actually use it unless I had a stick of ram in the mail. If your laptop is 512mb, and always will be 512mb, definitely leave XP on it.

I don't know if you guys read my 'Mother-in-Law's 512MB Vista' story, but...

All of the above posts are true, but I'll add a couple of things:

  1. 1) 512MB on a Vista lappy affects the video card (shared memory) adversely too!

For instance, let's say you're in Word 2007 (which took like 2 minutes to load) and you decide to go the desktop for something... On her lappy, part of the desktop would come up, then another part, and another, and another, yada, yada, yada.

It would take like 10 seconds for all the remnants of the Word 2007 to disappear IF it disappeared at all.

Her 2GB RAM Christmas Present took care of this...
  1. 2) There should be a law against taking advantage of elderly ppl - selling them Vista HB computers with 512MB RAM.

    I mean, come on - have a heart!!! 🙂

I didn't say I was keeping vista on this pc with only 512 mb of ram. Just wanted to try and then see what you all thought. I agree though its a bad idea.

It's ugly.

I've worked on a number of Vista 512 units, & it drives me crazy.

I don't really believe in tweaking OSes much, but with Vista & 512 MB, tweaking to remove stuff is pretty much necessary...

I bought 2GB of SODIMM RAM, for my mother-in-law's lappy, at a Fry's B&M for 29 bones - took 3 minutes to install - no kidding!

I've never seen anything like it!

2GB RAM instantly turned an otherwise unusable POS into a perfectly nice machine... 😉

I have a laptop with Vista Basic and it runs ok with 512MB. Since then I've upgraded to 1GB and it runs better but it really wasn't bad before. Mind you I don't do anything memory-intensive with it, mostly just browse the web.
