Vista 32 or 64?

Can someone explain the difference between vista 32 bit and 64 bit? Which one should I get? The only thing I've read and heard about is that 32-bit would won't recognize 4gb or more ram.

I'm more into gaming than any media editing.

I'm in the same situation. I am going to build a new box and have dual boot xp pro sp2/Vista but which Vista, 32 or 64?

Say games are the main use what is best? I've heard arguments for both.

Drivers are a wee bit more mature in 32 than in 64, although the gap is much smaller now than it used to be. You will need 64bit for 4gb+ ram, and considering memory prices, thats not all too extravagant anymore.

If youre going to buy an OEM version to last you for years thats either 64 or 32, then go 64, its more future proof. If youre buying retail, and don't mind reinstalling Vista a year or so from now when you do upgrade to 4gb RAM, I'd go with 32 for now.

I have had no problems with gaming or drivers(have all drivers) in my Vista x64,very mature IMHO,however do remember Vista x64 has no legacy 16 bit support ,so those very old 16 bit games won't run,you can get round that with Virtual 2007 if needed.

In my case I'm very glad I went with Vista x64, very stable ,gaming is fine and all my software works ,can't really ask for much more.


The 4GB plus memory handling of Vista x64 and slighty better security and no legacy 16 bit crap in the OS swayed it for me.

What about the 4 Gig issues with Creative X-Fi sound cards and Vista 64. Also, what about the WD Raptor and 8800GTX conflict in Vista?

A LaserJet 1018 lacking a 64 bit driver from HP is keeping me from shelling out $10 for a 64 bit version of my Vista Business I got for free during the fabled Powertogether campaign.

The white noise issue? I have a X-FI on a 32gig box and I've run into it a couple times now (it is a PITA when it occurs, but the card has been fine 99% of the time). But my understanding is it's bugged and newer drivers should resolve it at some point.

Yeah, I was going to use the Raptor for a dual boot xp pro sp2/vista 64... but now I'm not so sure it's a good idea. Although it's been hard to confirm this problem with other users... Maybe I'll use the: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s for my OS/APPS drive?

It didnt look like they confirmed it with V64 either, I was kinda curious as to what the underlying issue was, it certainly sounded very strange...

I am not sure what to make of this article, but i have the Raptor WD1500ADFD with Vista 64 & an 8800 GTX with no such issues.

I really do not believe this is WD's fault.

Get your Raptors guys; this article is sketchiness at best, since there's tons of users with the same components with no such issues, & basically only THG with the issue...

I had a quick read, they used 32 bit version of Vista,

After installing the OS (Windows Vista Enterprise Edition 32 Bit, English)

and they also say this at the end,

Tom's Hardware will no longer the WD1500 for testing from our Munich labs.

Additionally, we suggest users looking for to build an error-free system look for a different hard drive.

We found it very disappointing that Nvidia's driver can receive a WHQL-certification, which is tantamount to Microsoft's seal of approval, and still cause such fatal problems. Of course it is still possible that the problem lies with Windows Vista. However, since we were unable to replicate this issue with any other combination of hardware, we are inclined to let Microsoft, its programmers and its developers off the hook.

This thread reminds me of this thread. It's very refreshing to see people finally realising x64 isn't as bad as they thought. For almost 6 months I've notices that when there was a driver release for x86 there was one for x64. Then again, I was/am running new hardware.

I saw a thread over in GH, about someone running Vista (I think 32-bit), that had trouble with their system recognizing some raptors. It would recognize 320GB WD SATA drives fine though.
