Vista 32-bit: Refresh rate in Games - Help

The Control Panel introduced with the 9x.xx Forceware didn't bring the option to be able to activate the refresh rate override. This option is used to synchronize the monitor with the video card, according to the Hertz capacity of the monitor. Windows recognizes and interprets the execution of the games by the speed of impression of his frames per second, these are synchronized with the Hertz of the monitor and with this the deface wont happen.

An example is counter-strike 1.6, this game needs 100 fps to be able to play it in optimal conditions. The way of doing this is activating the vertical synch (vsync ON) and putting the refresh rate to 100 Hertz. That is the way I obtain 100 fps constant. Running the game without that synchronism makes a quite visible deface between frame and frame, getting to be an annoyance and disadvantage without counting in some cases it creates symptoms of sickness.

I could go into an extense discussion about frames or how LCD against CRT works, but this is not my intention. I know that I can run well most of games in a default configuration in any windows and getting 60 fps, but that is something i don't want, what i look is to get 100 fps specifically in games like CS 1.6, Quake3 with 120 fps or Quake 4 or any other valve sources games.

I have a Nvidia 8800 GTX with Forceware 97,44 modified by nv_disp.inf that allows to activate the old Control Panel. There I have the Refresh Rate Overrides option which works well in Windows XP.

I tried to install the 158.45 beta and 158.24 Forceware WHQL for Vista x32 with the modified nv_disp.inf without success. It doesn?t allow me to finish the installation.
Following some models i found in Internet i managed myself to modify the register and could activate the old panel but without the refresh rate overrides option.

This i could do in XP with Coolbits, and i followed that model so i could finally activate it, but when i want to change it to 100 hz i do it, then i go to game and realize it's not active, i got back to control panel options and see everything is on default. I also added the register so that i can run game in 1024x768 with 100hz but no exit at all there also.

Finally, I would like to know if anyone else is looking for a solution to override the refresh rate. I've tried a lot of programs, Refresh force, reforce, rivaturner, powerstrip, directrefresh, etc. but none worked. Do you know any software which can help me control the refresh rate in Windows vista? if thats the case, I don't really care about the old Control Panel.

Thanks,

I use an ati card and a lcd in vista so I can't directly solve your problem. I can tell you how to force it in IDs games.

Add this line to your quake3\baseq3\autoexec.cfg (works for q4, doom III and other similar games:

seta r_displayRefresh "100"

There are known issues with refresh rates "forcing" in Vista, especially on CRT's (that's my case, forcing me to switch back to XP on my dual-boot system for general PC activity and gaming as well, Vista isn't compatible with most of the CRT's on the market). There's a thread that might contain information that you might find useful about similar issues in Vista at NVNews.net: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=85615
