Vista 32 bit or 64 bit?

I am getting a new video card and going from ATI camp to Nvidia. So I decided a complete format and reinstall is in order considering the junk that the CCC likes to leave around after uninstall. Anyway I got both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Vista Ultimate. Which would be a good upgrade path? I mostly just game on the PC and have 4GB Ram. For everything else I have my trusty Dell Inspiron laptop.

Im on 64bit but I think 32 bit still is the king in compatibility. One business software which I use does not work and the latest bodybugg also does not work on 64bit vista.

the Desktop is only for games. I still have XP 32 bit on my laptop to run my work related apps and tools.

You can run those programs in VM.

but that means you have to run a entire other OS. Unless there is some emulation stuff on windows now i dont know about? Like wine

At this point, I think the main issue with Vista x64 compatibility is whether the software will run in Vista at all. Unless the program has 16-bit code or a 16-bit installer, if it will run on Vista x32, it will probably run on Vista x64, too.

Regarding drivers, MOST hardware that has 32-bit Vista drivers probably has 64-bit Vista drivers too. But not all.

Not necessarily. I have a a business program which works in Vista 32 bit and could not find a way to make it work in Vista 64. The developer said he is working on fixing it and said he is aware of the issue. Likewise, another body calorie device which I'm using called sensewear also does not work in 64bit. Thats more a driver problem more than anything else.

I just got a new laptop with 2gb RAM and I already installed 32bit Vista.
Now I need to decide if I should upgrade to 4gb and install 64bit.

I would need to download a 64bit version, as I only have the 32bit DVD now.
